Faculty, staff win awards in teaching, outreach, diversity, service from college, university
Multiple College of Science faculty and staff recently were honored with awards from both the college and university levels.
Certificates of Teaching Excellence
Given by Virginia Tech Academy of Teaching Excellence, this award is given to faculty or staff instructors who: Show compelling evidence that students are learning effectively as a direct result of the instructor’s pedagogies; demonstrates exemplary course and/or curriculum design incorporating pedagogical practices; shows a high level of professional development, service, and/or campus/community outreach; and has shared his/her pedagogical innovations, course/curriculum design, and success publicly outside the Virginia Tech campus.
The winners from the College of Science are Mark Embree, a professor in the Department of Mathematics and director of the Computational Modeling and Data Analytics program; Kristin Phillips, assistant professor and director of undergraduate programs in the School of Neuroscience; and Stephanie Voshell, an instructor in the Department of Biological Sciences.
College of Science Award for Outreach Excellence
This award recognizes an individual or team in the College of Science for outstanding achievements that contribute to its outreach mission to the community-at-large, the nation, and/or the world. Recipients are Professor Alex Elgart and Associate Professor Leonardo Mihalcea, both in the Department of Mathematicas.
College of Science Diversity Award
This award honors faculty and staff in the College of Science who have made significant and sustained contributions that foster diversity and an inclusive climate in the College of Science, in Virginia Tech, and in the broader community. Recipient is Neil Hauenstein, associate professor in the Department of Psychology.
College of Science Outstanding Staff Award
This award recognizes staff members whose consistent excellence advances their department, school, academy, and/or the college. Recipients are Joli Huynh, graduate program coordinator with the Department of Chemistry, and Kim Raymond, budget manager with the Department of Psychology.
College of Science Staff Service Award
A new award started this year, it honors an individual College of Science staff member or team led by a College of Science staff member, who demonstrates sustained service that promotes strong communities, in the spirit of Ut Prosim. Recipients are Katrina Lasley, teaching lab coordinator, and Hannah Bradley and Kevin Laoh, both laboratory specialists, all in the microbiology program in the Department of Biological Sciences.
