The College of Science acknowledges that academic advising is a critical component of higher education and academic advisors often do not receive the recognition they deserve. They are the mentors, the guides, the advocates who ensure our students not only navigate the complexities of academia but also thrive in the process. This is why we established the Outstanding Academic Advisor Awards for two categories, faculty and professional academic advisors in Spring 2021.

Effective Spring 2024, the College of Science established one award, the Outstanding Academic Advising Award for which staff, faculty, and A/P Faculty are eligible.

Nominees for this award are not nominated by colleagues, administrators, nor their supervisors. But, by the individuals who gain the most from advising experiences. That's right. Students nominate their academic advisor for this award!

Students show their appreciation for their academic advisor by nominating them if they display any or all of the characteristics below:

  1. Demonstrates a caring and helpful attitude
  2. Delivers accurate information regarding program requirements including General Education
  3. Provides insight for semester and career planning
  4. Informs you of university resources available
  5. Knowledgeable of Virginia Tech regulations, policies, and procedures
  6. Supports student development through academic, social, and professional engagement
  7. Monitors your progress towards graduation
Prior award recipients are eligible again after 3 years.
