Madeline Schreiber
- Professor, Department of Geosciences
Madeline Schreiber is the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the Virginia Tech College of Science, where she is also a Professor in the Department of Geosciences. She received PhD and MS degrees in geology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a BS degree in geology from Yale University.
In the Department of Geosciences, she served as Associate Department Head, Graduate Program Director, and Chair of the Personnel, Promotion and Tenure, Curriculum, and Mentoring Committees. She has also been a Faculty Fellow in the Office of Faculty Affairs and served as the Work-Life Liaison for the College of Science for more than 10 years.
Her research program in hydrogeology uses field observations, laboratory experiments and modeling approaches to make quantitative predictions about solute behavior in natural waters, with an emphasis on metals and trace elements. She has secured external research funding from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Institutes for Water Research, and private foundations. She has taught undergraduate courses in Geosciences Career and Professional Development (First Year Experience course), Resources Geology and Groundwater Hydrology, and graduate courses in Chemical Hydrogeology, Karst Hydrology, and Professional Development and Ethics. She has been the primary advisor for 30 graduate students, a committee member for more than 75 graduate students, and has supervised more than 50 undergraduates in research.
She is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America (GSA), has served on the GSA Council (2020-24), including a one-year term on the Executive Council of GSA, and was the 2025 recipient of the George Burke Maxey Distinguished Service Award from the GSA Hydrogeology Division.
